America's most hated
Article Abstract:
The decision by electrical appliance manufacturer Sunbeam to dismiss CEO Al Dunlap has been greeted with joy by some observers. This is particularly the case among the many people who lost their jobs as Dunlap established a reputation for being fiercely committed to downsizing. Dunlap's story indicates that growth can become extremely addictive. It is clear that the practice of loan trading, in which customers are encouraged or made to purchase goods in the current quarter that would otherwise have been purchased in the next, will eventually prove unwise. His story also indicates that better corporate governance can be effective.

Is the board too cushy?
Article Abstract:
Recent controversy surrounding the high payments made to non-executive directors by some companies has served to spark off debate about wider issues relating to the role and responsibilities of the board of directors. Most CEOs have a rather negative view of their board, accepting its presence only because they are obliged to do so by law. Some are tempted to give large payments and benefits to non-executive directors in order to retain the support of a group which could threaten their independence and even their future employment.

What your computer can't do for you
Article Abstract:
Computers are having a significant impact on business, especially in terms of making it unnecessary for employees to undertake mechanical, repetitive tasks. Computers are in fact humanising the world of work, as they leave employees with human tasks such as judging, creating and developing relationships. Employees are being given greater freedom and responsibility as a result of the use of information technology, and work now has a greater intellectual content.
