How legislation is introduced, passed, or killed
Article Abstract:
The processes involved in the passing or rejection of a proposed legislative bill is described. A bill is initially drafted by a legislator or individual then introduced into the legislative process by a single or group of legislators. The bill is then assigned to a legislative committee responsible for approving or killing the bill. Public hearings are held as part of the committee's evaluation process, followed by an executive session to discuss findings. If the committee approves the bill, it is returned to the chamber where it came from, that is Senate bills to the Senate and House bills to the House to be listed in the chamber's calendar and await presentation. The bill may be passed by the chamber as is or ammended on the floor prior to passing. Approved bills are then engrossed, signed by the officials concerned and becomes effective on a specific date required in each state.
