Elf's chief vows to defeat TotalFina bid

Philippe Jaffre, the chairman of Elf Aquitaine SA, said in a speech on July 8, 1999 that he would defend his company against TotalFina SA's hostile takeover bid. TotalFina has made a hostile bid of 42 billion euros to acquire Elf. Mr. Jaffre claimed that TotalFina's chairman Thierry Desmarest acted prematurely in ending negotiations that could have resulted in an amicable merger between the two firms.
