An act of God
Article Abstract:
Weather modeling research has resulted in a better understanding of the regional effects of the El Nino weather phenomenon, although the cause is still a mystery. The impact of Ninos may be lessened in the future because scientists understand more about them and how to counteract their damage. Depending on location, the effect of a Nino could be floods and storms, droughts, or diseases such as malaria and cholera. The potential for damage can be curtailed by planting appropriate crops for the predicted weather, and containing any disease outbreak in its earliest stages. The strongest Nino in recent history occurred in 1982-83, causing more than $13 billion in damage.

Big is beautiful
Article Abstract:
Size is important for biotechnology companies, and larger biotech firms tend to perform better. Companies valued at under $200 million market capitalization have seen a drop in their stock price of 12% and those over $1 billion have seen a 7% rise in early 1999. Investors have gained greater understanding of risks involved in the industry, and demand more. Small companies can still sometimes attract investors, as is shown by the case of EntreMed.
