An application of sizing service territories
Article Abstract:
The variable cost of delivery and the fixed cost of facilities were incorporated into a model for the design of a service network such as that of US Postal Service. The model was based on the assumption that delivery units were of the same size with the same number of carriers, may be enlarged or eliminated swiftly, and occupy the center of equal-sized and shaped service territories. Reduction of some of these assumptions did not alter substantially the results established by the model.

Global and variable cost manufacturing systems
Article Abstract:
Several manufacturing and distribution policies were examined with respect to the impact of exchange rate and cost uncertainties on the materials sourcing, transportation and production in a global manufacturing network. The results showed that the use of order statistics minimizes total cost functions and that equal sized plants minimize costs optimally. In addition, it was found that excess capacity allows plants to shift production and reduce costs.
