An uneasy calm: political crisis hangs fire after massive demonstrations
Article Abstract:
The threat of violence erupting in Thailand's largest protest action against the government of Prime Minister Suchinda Kraprayoon was defused by a May 11, 1992 truce agreement. However, the truce between the Chamlong Srimuang-led protesters and the ruling coalition is apparently shaky. About 150,000 politicians, students, academics and others of the Bangkok populace were on the verge of clashing with thousandsof police and military personnel prior to the truce agreement. Chamlong catalyzed the massive demonstrations against Suchinda's leadership by going on a hunger strike a week earlier.

Press and pirates
Article Abstract:
The violent repression of pro-democracy demonstrators in Thailand by its military has been adequately covered by the country's print media and video counterfeiters. With radio and television undermilitary and government control, Thais had to rely on the relatively independent and critical print media for stories regarding the demonstrations. Video counterfeiters, on the other hand, did some good by releasing thousands of copies of uncensored video footages of the Thai army's ruthless assault on the demonstrators. Copies sold for 200 baht in stalls across Thailand.
