Analysis of expected queueing delays for decision making in production planning
Article Abstract:
An explicit, closed form expression that closely resemble the minimal expected queueing delay is developed to allow answers to what-if questions on changes in model parameters. The model can be simply extended to include stochastic processing times for items. A standard bottleneck work center is regarded where semi-manufactured goods are processed in groups. The analytical expressions can be employed simply to support managerial decisions on decrease of set up time and on widening of capacity.

An exploration of models that minimize leadtime through batching of arrived orders
Article Abstract:
The impact of batching decisions on manufacturing leadtime and work-in-process in inventory control models based on queueing theory was examined. Specifically, the average leadtime for batch arrivals characterized by an Erlang distribution was obtained via a tractable approximation and optimized with respect to batch size. The results underscored the difference in outcomes obtained with Poisson and Erlang arrivals.
