Wild east pioneers

Article Abstract:

Eastern European governments are recruiting western executives in order to inject western management expertise into Eastern European business and industry. The countries with the greatest demand for western managers are those already with significantly developed privatization programs: Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Yugoslavia. Western executives taking up positions in Eastern Europe must cope with problems that include language, archaic telecommunications systems, poorly developed business channels, and poor accommodations. Western companies are offering managers high compensation to endure such hardships, and most of the recruits are young and ambitious. The willingness of indigenous managers to learn western management methods can be negatively affected by the higher status and better pay of western executives. Western executives can be unpopular with Eastern European managers for they often must extensively eliminate jobs to reduce overstaffing.

Article Abstract:

Eastern Europe is offering Western European and US power engineering companies a major new market. The heavy electrical engineering industry in Western Europe has been hurt by overcapacity since the early 1970s, and European Commission proposals to promote power transmission across the European Community should make as much as 40% of installed electric capacity surplus. Power engineering companies entering the Eastern European market include Siemens, Asea Brown Boveri, and General Electric. Eastern European countries must decide whether to go install solid-fuel or gas-fired conventional power plants or nuclear power plants, decisions that will greatly affect the European power engineering industry.
