Anxiety in the Alps
Article Abstract:
Switzerland will celebrate its 700th anniversary as a confederation in Aug 1991, but the traditional aloofness maintained by the Swiss in regards to the rest of Europe is being challenged by the approach of the single European market in 1992. The success of the European Community (EC) is leading to the weakening of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), of which Switzerland is a member. Of the seven EFTA countries, Switzerland is the EC's most important trading partner. Almost 60% of Swiss exports go to the EC, and 70% of Switzerland's imports are from the EC. The weakening of the EFTA and the imminent single European market of 1992 have raised the issue of Swiss membership in the EC, which previously was unthinkable. The large Swiss multinationals have already developed a large presence in the EC in order to exploit the advantages of the single European market and to avoid being locked out of the EC.

Realigning for the open market in defence
Article Abstract:
Guest, Keen & Nettlefolds PLC (GKN) (Great Britain) chairman David Lees is preparing the engineering products company to enter the barrier-free market of 1992 by expanding into the military hardware and the industrial services industries. Lees hopes to guide the company into achieving an earned profits split with 30% each for US, Continental Europe, and UK markets, and 10% for the rest of the world markets. GKN's main emphasis for the past two decades has been on manufacturing constant velocity joints for automobiles, which accounted for over 50% of the company's trading surplus in 1987 of 187 million pound sterling.
