It is still only speculation, but Apple Computers might open a chain of its own stores in the strongest US markets. Gateway appears to be Apple's model and source of retail-savvy executives; more speculation. The company's current resellers, dealers and catalogers would be hurt. But it's hard to ignore the success Gateway has had with stand-alone stores and stores within stores. Apple's recent sales figures have been disappointing.
