Approximating probability density functions and their convolutions using orthogonal polynomials
Article Abstract:
A general approach for using orthogonal polynomials in making polynomial approximations of probability density functions and their convolutions is presented. The procedure, which was developed following a comparison of the performance of five classes of orthogonal polynomials, provides accurate probability estimates especially in applications where the probability density function cannot be integrated in closed form.
