Architects learn lessons from CTC design challenge
Article Abstract:
Fifteen city technology colleges (CTCs) have been built in England and architects are debating the style of the buildings. CTCs were launched in 1986 as an educational experiment which would emphasise the technological aspects of the curriculum and encourage change in mainstream secondary schools. The colleges were intended to be funded by industry and are the subject of political and educational debate. Architecturally, they combine industrial and educational aspects, reflecting the technological bias and the concerns of sponsors but each college has its own style.

Sense of identity: John Sorrell has six more months to run as chairman of the Design Council, just one of the bodies where he has helped to bring a recognition of the importance of good design into the political mainstream
Article Abstract:
John Sorrell is Design Council chairman and is an expert on corporate identity. He is in constant contact with architects and he believes their work is the key to creating a better international image for Britain. He formed his own design practice in 1976 with Frances Newell, and Newell and Sorrell recently merged with Interbrand, a design and communication business. He led a formal review of the Design Council in 1993 and is proud of what the new Design Council has achieved.

Casting light on Nordic design
Article Abstract:
The Scandanavian Design exhibition at the Design Museum, London, England shows the work of designers who were highly influential in the post-war years together with designs by younger people. The recent works both respect and move on from the tradition of the past. Most of the exhibits are domestic objects and are in keeping with the social awareness of the Scandanavian design movement.
