Asia's labour pains
Article Abstract:
Rising numbers of illegal workers in East Asia are posing problems for the countries the workers leave and for countries they go to. The illegal worker population of Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore went from under 200,000 in 1980 to about 2-3 million in 1993, with Japan being by far the most frequent destination. Countries producing illegal workers include Thailand and the Philippines. Economic opportunity that cannot be obtained at home is the basic reason for immigrating. Awarding more work permits, unskilled labor included, could improve the situation.

Australia's labor pains
Article Abstract:
The choice between theLabor Government and the Opposition Liberal-National Coalition is seen to be also a choice between economic reform or the absence of it. Coalition leader John Hewson made changes in the aggressivve and comprehensive economic program he prepared in Nov 1991. Due to this political platform Hewson found himself leading by 7.5% over Labor Party leader Bob Hawke in Jan 1992. But since no significant economic recovery registered for the program, Hewson's lead narrowed while Labor leader Paul Keating caught on.
