Article Abstract:
The army chief of Lebanon, Emile Lahoud, has been selected as the presidential candidate by President Hafez Assad of Syria. A president has to be elected each six years in Lebanon, and Lahoud, as a civil servant, should resign two years prior to becoming a candidate. Syria occupies Lebanon and has previously amended the constitution to allow an extension for an incumbent. The general will have freedom on everday issues, though less freedom on basic policies.

An engine for growth?
Article Abstract:
China's largest construction project, Three Gorges dam, is expected to catapult economic change to three provinces in south-west China - Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan. The dam is expected to be operational by 2003 and completed by 2009 and will provide extensive benefits to local construction-related industries. The government is hoping private, domestic and foreign investors will invest in the Chongqing region surrounding the dam after its completion.
