Astronomers studying 'extrasolar' planets have found that present-day telescopes can be used to examine the composition of distant planets. Extrasolar planets are those which orbit other stars. Sodium has been found in the atmosphere of a planet around the star HD 209458.

Astronomers are learning more about the nature of blue stragglers and how they derive their energy. Helium is being used as a marker to determine which blue stragglers obtain hydrogen from collisions and which take energy from neighboring stars.

Astronomers have discovered that while light travels in a strait path, intervening mass can cause distortions, thus throwing off images seen through a telescope. A lens that compensates for this effect is being updated.
