Attack of nerves: Asian leaders fear pressure on trade human rights
Article Abstract:
Asian governments and economic experts have expressed a mixed response to the future foreign and trade policies of the Democratic president-elect Bill Clinton. Japan was wary of the US reaction to its trade surplus worth $30 million, as opposed to the guarded response of the Chinese. Clinton's focus on human-rights was of greatest concern to Indonesia and Malaysia, while his proposal on ending trade sanctions was welcomed in Vietnam. Most Indians and South Koreans were also confident about the Democrats, but some economists and businessmen expressed concern about trade relations with the US.

Bill Clinton's Pacific
Article Abstract:
US president-elect Bill Clinton's trade and defense policies towards Asia will be a trial of his political judgment as well as the Democratic party's approach to foreign relations. Clinton has proposed new policies to promote free trade with China and Japan, as well as continue military aid to Asia. However, his reluctance to include East Asia under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and his plans to increase taxes on foreign investors, reduce defense aid to South Korea and avoid discussions on Vietnam may prove to be sensitive issues for the future of US-Asian relations.

Distant thunder
Article Abstract:
The US president-elect Bill Clinton will have to divert his attention towards Asia's political and economic developments very soon. He will have to deal with the eruption of ethnic conflicts in the newly formed democracies in Asia as well as Japan's trade surplus with the US. Other issues which might call for Clinton's consideration include revival of US relations with China as the most favored nation with or without human rights conditions, control of nuclear proliferation in India and Pakistan, as well as failure of the Khmer Rouge to comply with UN peace initiatives.
