Attracting new investors
Article Abstract:
The Basque Country of Spain is attracting foreign investment from around the world. South Korean and Japanese investors have established manufacturing operations including Daewoo which will produce refrigerators in a $86.2 million factory. The Basque Government offers a number of economic incentives to foreign companies including 'Ekimen' or Initiative which provides a subsidy equal to as much as 25% of the total investment made in the region. The government also approved a $2.3 billion investment plan for infrastructure that will include 150 projects.

A number of Basque companies have adapted to difficult economic conditions by creating a reputation for quality in niche market sectors. These include Vicinay Cadenas of Bilbao, Spain which produces high-tech chain. Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarril (CAF) produces trains and is very active in the Asia market. CAF won a substantial contract in 1994 to supply trains to Hong Kong and also produces railway equipment through joint ventures in Indonesia and in the Philippines.

Article Abstract:
The Basque Government has identified Asia as a main target for international trade growth with Malaysia and Indonesia as priority markets. The government reported that at least one Basque trade mission visits Asia each month representing industries including electronics, tubing, capital goods and machine tools. China is the most important individual market for Basque goods and accounted for 10% of all Spanish machine-tools exports to Asia in 1995.
