Austria: Boost to rail/road infrastructure firms
Article Abstract:
Measures to help the economic situation are to be introduced. The government is to allocate funds of Sch 3mn from the budget for this purpose. Mainly, however, these measures are based on finances external to the budget, for the extension of railway tracks. This is so that the zero deficit is not at risk. There is to be an extension to the liability of the railway infrastructure company Schig and its counterpart Asfinag, responsible for the construction of the road network. This will rise by Sch 63bn to Sch 206bn for Schig and to Sch 130bn for Asfinag. Fees for use from trains for Schig should rise to Sch 10mn from 3.9mn. Economists believe that psychological measures to encourage public spending need to be introduced.

Austria: Extension of infrastructure towards the east
Article Abstract:
Peter Mitterbauer, president of the industrial association, announced on 4 December 2001 that an impending traffic collapse concerning infrastructure towards the eastern regions could only be averted by a massive extension of the road and railway network. Mitterbauer stressed that the general infrastructure plan, which foresees investments of Sch 215bn for road construction and Sch 423bn for rail projects by 2030, would point into the right direction, only that the time span of nearly 30 years would be to long. In his opinion the extension of infrastructure connecting Austria with eastern regions should be carried out quicker.
