Aventis SA dismissed the possibility of a merger with rival drugmaker Sanofi Synthelabo SA, and persuaded the shareholders not to entertain a hostile takeover offer from Sanofi. Sanofi-Synthelabo SA announced plans to split off underperforming assets and provided a forecast for stronger sales growth in coming years.
