SAFFRON SINKS
Article Abstract:
At the beginning of the season, saffron was traded at Rs38,000 per kg in November 1998. The price fell to Rs34,000-35,000 per kg in December 1998. Saffron of Iran was selling at Rs27,000-28,000 per kg. The price of saffron has been reduced to Rs28,000-29,000 per kg now to match that of Iran. The demand for Indian saffron was falling due to its higher price. Saffron is used in India by zarda (value-added tobacco) manufacturers and ayurvedic medicine makers. The output of saffron in India in 1998 is estimated at 20,000 kg, compared to 35,000 kg in 1997 and 23,000 kg in 1996. The price of saffron in November-December 1996 was Rs50,000 per kg. (rk/kvr)
