MARUTI SAYS NO PRICE CUTS, TO UP ZEN OUTPUT

Maruti Udyog Limited (MUL) will not reduce the price of its cars but give value for money to the customers. It plans to improve service standards. MUL plans to increase the production capacity of Zen model cars. It plans to commission 1 lakh additional capacity by February 1999. It expects its market share to stabilise at 65-70 percent (84 percent now) due to competition in the small car segment. It produces 90,000 Zen cars now. Its sales increased by 1 percent in the first half of 1998-99. (rk)

CAR COS TO DRIVE UP SECOND-HAND MARKET

Car producers, including General Motors India and Maruti Udyog Ltd, are to support second-hand car business. General Motors India is already providing refurbishment of and stand-by guarantees for used cars through financiers and dealers. Maruti Udyog Ltd also plans to back up the used car business through refurbishment. The used car market is expected to have a huge potential as the spreads in this business are 200-300 basis points more than those in the new car trade. (ag/kvr)
