BAJAJ AUTO: TIME TO MEET THE EMISSION NORMS
Article Abstract:
The market share of two-wheelers major, Bajaj Auto Ltd (BAL) declined from 44.5 percent in 1996-97 to 40.5 percent in 1997-98, due to heavy competition from LML, Kinetic and Suzuki. To arrest this fall, BAL plans to launch new vehicles and upgrade its two- stroke engines to four-stroke across all vehicles. In September 1997, the company launched the Classic SL in the scooter segment and the four-stroke motorcycle, Boxer, mainly targeting the semi- urban and rural markets. In the coming three years, 17 new models will be launched, starting with the 4-stroke version of the M80, produced at the Aurangabad plant and the 74 cc Sapphire, manufactured at the Pune plant. The scooterette, Spirit, is to be launched in mid-1998. In competition to TVS Scooty, the 175 cc Infinity will be unveiled in the first quarter of 1999, the 110 cc Mercury will be available in June 1998 and the 125 cc two- stroke Prowler will be launched in August 1998. In the three- wheeler segment, a four-stroke 175 cc vehicle will enter the market initially with a front engine followed by a diesel-powered goods carrier. In the coming years, BAL is to invest Rs850 crore for its new product launches and capacity expansions. Of this, Rs350 crore will be spent for design and development of new models and the remaining Rs500 crore will be used to expand the manufacturing capacity at the Aurangabad plant. (gsh)
