Balrampur Chini Mills Limited of Calcutta has announced its audited financial results of the year ended March 31, 1998. It crushed 250.23 lakh quintals of sugarcane during 1997-98 (220.38 lakh quintals in 1996-97). Its installed capacity was 16,000 tonnes crushed per day. Its recovery rate was 10.09 percent (9.50 percent). It declared a dividend of 50 percent for 1997-98. BALRAMPUR CHINI ON ACQUISITION PROWL AGAIN

Balrampur Chini, a sugar company owned by the Calcutta-based Saraogis, is looking at an acquisition in Uttar Pradesh (UP), where all its sugar units are located. The company says that it has started negotiations with several running sugar mills in UP as potential takeover targets. The acquisition is to be funded mainly through internal accruals. The company acquired Bhabnan Sugar in 1990 and Tulsipur Sugar in April 1998. Bhabnan Sugar was merged with Balrampur Chini in 1994-95 while Tulsipur Sugar will be merged in the next millennium. Balrampur Chini currently has a capacity of 16,000 tonnes crushed per day (tcd), which includes 6000 tcd of Bhabnan Sugar. Tulsipur Sugar now has a capacity of 2500 tcd which is being expanded to 5000 tcd. Its merger will make Balrampur Chini the largest sugar manufacturing company in India. (khr)

BALRAM CHINI TO RESTRUCTURE EQUITY CAPITAL

Balrampur Chini Mills has decided to restructure its equity capital. Currently, the authorised share capital of the company is made up of 100,000 preference shares of Rs100 each and 490 lakh preference shares of Rs10 each. This will be restructured as 10 lakh preference shares of Rs100 each and 40 lakh equity shares of Rs10 each. With a view to fund its expansion and diversification projects, the company has decided to increase the borrowing limits from Rs200 crore to Rs500 crore. The capacity of its recently acquired Tulsipur Sugar mill will be enhanced to 5,000 tonnes crushed per day (tcd). (gs)
