JISCO NET PROFIT DOWN 37%

Jindal Iron & Steel Co (Jisco) which manufactures hot rolled (HR) plates and galvanised products has posted 37 percent rise in net profit to Rs31 crore for 1997-98. The turnover declined by 31 percent to Rs1,066 crore. Its export turnover increased to Rs172 crore (Rs100 crore in 1996-97). The poor performance of the company has been attributed to high interest cost and depreciation. The interest cost increased by 97 percent to Rs47 crore, while depreciation by 62 percent to Rs39 crore. The company has declared a 20 percent dividend for the year. Following capacity expansion, Jisco's production of galvanised products increased to 241,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) from 178,000 tpa. (gs)

TATA SSL CUTS DOWN LOSS TO Rs4.58 CRORE

Tata SSL Ltd (TSL), formerly Special Steel Ltd incurred a net loss of Rs4.58 crore for 1997-98 (a net loss of Rs14.25 crore in 1996-97). TSL had projected a net profit of Rs34.86 crore for 1997-98. Turnover is estimated at Rs776.72 crore (Rs660 crore). TSL has not recommended any dividend due to loss. The dismal performance is attributed to slowdown of the economy and increase in input cost.
