BT TO REVIEW JV WITH VSNL
Article Abstract:
British Telecommunications Plc (BT) has decided to review its involvement in a joint venture hub project with Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) by the end of September 1998. BT and VSNL had entered into an agreement in April 1997 to jointly invest $376 million in an international traffic hub in India and a supporting transmission network. The department of telecommunications has not yet cleared the project, which was to connect Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta and Chennai, would end its monopoly on domestic long- distance traffic. BT says it is answerable to its shareholders and cannot keep on waiting. (khr)

PILOT PROJECT TO OFFER CHEAPER LONG DISTANCE TELEPHONY

The task force on information technology has installed a high- speed V-SAT and radio frequency hub for wireless satellite transmission in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra. It plans to offer long-distance telephony service to 100 villages in Warnanagar area of Kolhapur using Internet technology under Warnanagar pilot project. The long-distance telephone calls will work out to 25 percent of the regular tariff. The tariff for the Internet-based telephony service has not yet been finalised. (rk)

VSNL TO REVAMP, OFFER COMMON NET-MAIL SERVICE
Article Abstract:
The monopoly Internet service provider in India, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) plans to revamp its Internet access services and provide new services. This is in an effort to face competition from private Internet service providers. The new service will include a common mail server. The company is to forge tie-ups with major international carriers to cut down its spending on international bandwidth by at least 30-40 percent. (gsh)
