The prepared baby food market is forecast to increase from 99.3 million pounds sterling in 1998 to 123.1 million pounds sterling by 2002. About 56% of all baby food was supplied in jars during 1997, with cans accounting for 31.7% of sales. About 60% of all baby food products were sold through multiple grocers in 1997.

Volume sales of baby milk in the UK reached 29,200 t in 1997, up 17.3% from 1993, with value sales rising by 32.8% to 147 million pounds sterling during the period. The market is dominated by Nutricia Ltd.'s Milupa brand and John Wyeth's SMA brand, together accounting for 86% of value sales in 1997. Sales of baby milk are forecast to reach 36,700 t in volume and 193 million pounds sterling in value by 2002.
