Back from the dead: Indonesia's Salim Group helps to revive Tech Pacific
Article Abstract:
Australia's Tech Pacific has become the Asia-Pacific area's top distributor of computer hardware and software and a major seller of cellular phones, only six years after near-collapse. The Salim Group of Indonesia took over with its Hong Kong branch, First Pacific, and installed Graham Pickles, then the head of a Tech Pacific subsidiary, as overall head. Sales have shot from A$190 million in 1991 to an expected A$1 billion in 1995, and profits are up from break-even in 1992 to A$17 million in 1994, due to efficiency and focus.

Labor's humiliation
Article Abstract:
Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating's ruling Labor Party was dealt a major blow as Victorian state election results showed voters dumping Labor bet Joan Kirner for Jeff Kennett who led a conservative coalition. Kennett's coalition of Liberal and National parties won a majority in the state legislature as Victorians seemed bent on punishing the Labor government for massive financial mismanagement.
