Article Abstract:
The peace process in Northern Ireland has encountered difficulties. The United Kingdom government argues that the Irish Republican Army (IRA) has not broken its ceasefire, but the unionists oppose this interpretation. The IRA has carried out a murder as well as expelling a number of young troublemakers. There are divisions within the Ulster Unionists, and they have not spoken out when loyalist paramilitaries have been involved in violent actions. There is more chance for a deal in private despite the public indignation expressed by both sides.

Article Abstract:
There is concern about a peace agreement in Northern Ireland, which includes a deadline for the Irish Republican Army (IRA) to agree to disarm. The Ulster Unionists do not wish to share power in the new parliament with Sinn Fein unless the IRA agrees to disarm. It is unclear whether the British government will revert to directly ruling Northern Ireland if no agreement can be reached on this issue. The United Kingdom Conservative Party opposes the release of prisoners from the IRA before an agreement has been reached on disarmament.
