Balkan rebirth
Article Abstract:
Aid to Bosnia has fostered corruption and there has been little effort to develop an independent economy. Agreements with existing power brokers in the Balkan region could reinforce corrupt practices. Customs services in the region act as barriers to entry since they are linked to warlords and mobsters. Western governments should seek to encourage the dismantlement of trade barriers in the Balkans, and seek to control trade in prostitutes, guns and drugs. The encouragement of legitimate exports witll provide alternatives to illegal trade. Western Europe should not fear cheap industrial or agricultural goods from the Balkans.
