Ban on tobacco print and outdoor ads inflames critics
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's anti-smoking sector is criticizing the loopholes present in the proposed ban on advertising on tobacco products. The loopholes allow retailers to continue to advertise tobacco products on their premises and allows for the 'indirect advertising' of tobacco products through their associated products or services. A total ban on tobacco advertising would be difficult since tobacco companies have established other product lines and services associated with the tobacco brands that are separate from the tobacco operations. Hong Kong plans a total ban on tobacco print advertising by Dec. 31, 1999, and a total ban on outdoor advertising two years afterwards.

Quick off the mark in China
Article Abstract:
Chinese government-owned publishing houses have offered books about the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, filling in a gap left when the government ordered newspapers to curtail their coverage of the event so as not to stir emotions among the masses. Books offered by China Workers' Press and China Social Sciences Press each sold out quickly. The new books take much of their information, including pictures, from the Internet.

Lawyers take first steps to fight tobacco in China
Article Abstract:
There are indications that the fight against Chinese tobacco interests, whose customers consume one of every three cigarettes in the world, will be an uphill battle. Chinese lawyers are gathering evidence to prove that tobacco companies market their products to children, but face economic and political challenges within the judicial system, including judges who may be unwilling to hear their cases.
