Bangkok begins building as-yet unfunded railway
Article Abstract:
Work has commenced on a mass-transit railway system in central Bangkok despite the lack of a detailed funding plan for the project. More than a dozen massive concrete pillars have been erected along the city's main streets and officials at Bangkok Transit System Corp. (BTSC) expect the project to be finished by 1998. Analysts, however, fear that the privately funded project may soon run out of funds. Although full-scale construction has been under way for over two months, BTSC officials have yet to pull together a $1.6 billion financing package for the elevated rail project.
