Bangkok struggles with privatization as unions resist: terms of IMF bailout require move on state enterprises, but labor organizations put up a fight
Article Abstract:
The initial attempt of the Thai government at privatizing state enterprises, in accordance to its commitments to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout conditions, was stalled by the threat of strike aired by the union of government workers. The government union at the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is protesting the sudden privatization of the agency, opting for a gradual sale of assets to fund the agency's expansion plans. The IMF $17.2 bil bailout package for Thailand calls for decreasing support for utilities and the privatization of state enterprises.

Follow that cab!
Article Abstract:
A number of suggested tips are provided for travelers to be able to hail only the best taxis in five major cities. For instance, in Bangkok, Thailand, the key to avoiding dishonest taxi drivers is to hail cabs that are on the move. Dishonest drivers typically park outside five-star hotels. Finding a taxicab in Jakarta, Indonesia, is easy, but hailing a reliable one with an honest meter and whose driver will bring passengers straight to their destination is difficult. Check drivers' faces with their licenses hanging over the dashboard as criminals are known to pose as taxi drivers.
