Bank of Italy criticized by EU over bank deals
Article Abstract:
The European Commission has criticized the Bank of Italy, concerned that the central bank is hindering ABN Amro Holding N.V. of the Netherlands from acquiring Banca Antonveneta S.p.A. of Italy. Italy's fragmented banking sector is seen as ripe for consolidation and the European Union is promoting an open market policy. Traditionally the Bank of Italy has not supported cross border acquisitions.
