Declan Ganley operates a number of businesses and business activities, mainly connected with the former Soviet bloc countries, through his company Ganley International. The 28-year-old Irishman has built up the company to a disclosed 1994 turnover of $150 million. Ganley's method is to purchase undervalued assets, instal a management team and build up value, with an aim of either running the operation profitably or selling it. Ganley's business activities include an extensive timber operation in the former Soviet Union and investments in voucher privatisation schemes in Albania and Croatia.

Some believe that social activities are declining in the US. Professor Robert Putnam, for example, points out a decrease in league bowling, church groups, and other social activities. However, the trend may be overstated. Many activities are declining, but others are growing.
