There have been a number of mergers in the pharmaceutical industry, and a new, large merger is planned between Glaxo Wellcome's and SmithKline Beecham. There has been speculation that this merger will trigger a new wave of mergers. Mergers can lead to disruption, as well as loss of market share. Size can be a benefit when developing new drugs, but new deals in the industry may bring benefits from combining research activities using new genetic tecnology.
