Big friendly giant
Article Abstract:
Economist Richard Schmalensee, giving evidence in the antitrust lawsuit being brought against Microsoft by the US Justice Dept, has claimed that the company does not have a monopoly, even in relation to PC operating systems. He believes that the Justice Dept's case against Microsoft is not based on the issue of whether the company is a monopoly in the operating systems market, arguing that evidence would indicate that Microsoft has not abused its power, even if it were a monopoly. He believes that Microsoft's profit-maximizing price for Windows 98 if it were a true monopoly would be between $900 and $2,000.
