Bitter medicine
Article Abstract:
Chinese workers who need medical attention are now unlikely to receive the standard of care they once did and those who work in unprofitable companies are finding that the firm does not have a large enough health care budget to cover even basic health care needs. Health insurance projects will not be fully effective for about 10 years and many people are unlikely to be keen to participate or be able to afford it. This welfare crisis is the biggest problem China faces in introducing economic reform and it is made harder because the people remember the good times under Communist rule.

Prima Donna
Article Abstract:
Jin Xing is China's most widely-known transsexual. Her work at the forefront of modern dance combines with her sex change to make her a major focus of individual expression. The Chinese usually despise nonconformity. Jin grew up as a male and gained recognition for dancing skills, but undertook government-approved sex change operations in Beijing during 1994 and 1995. She continued her career and choreography work after the operation, but critic Ou Jianping maintains that her dance does not show its previous excellence, and her choreography skills have yet to mature.
