UK prime minister Tony Blair was criticized by union leaders for not meeting with them shortly after he was elected in May 1997. They provided him with financial and political support during his campaign, yet have seen their power in the Labor Party erode in recent years. Their position is unknown.

British trade-unions have kept quiet during the campaign while continuing to finance the Labour Party. The possibility that the unions are planning to takeover after a Labour victory is analyzed. Changes in the union makeup of the party and pro-union Labour initiatives are discussed.
