The killing by Ciskei police of African National Congress (ANC) demonstrators has focussed world attention on the problem of the status of the 'homelands' in a post-apartheid South Africa. South African Pres de Klerk's National Party hopes the homelands will remain in existence, but the ANC firmly opposes this.

A group led by Afrikaner Freedom Foundation leader Carel Boshoff would like to begin a separate state for Afrikaners in the isolated, semi-desert area of the Northern Cape. The Afrikaner Resistance Movement wants to deny citizenship to anyone not racially pure.
