Buoyant ratings or hot air?
Article Abstract:
In Asia, some local bonds rating agencies are under political pressure to give positive ratings, which may bias their objectivity. Care should be taken to investigate the rating agency and to use the rating only as a guideline to how much risk is involved. A list of local rating companies in Asia is included.

Excess cash at Asian banks is being used to buy Asian bond issues, instead of lending to companies. Companies would rather issue bonds, and individuals would rather buy bonds than invest their money in other, more risky ways.
