Bottled up; the market in China is promising and perilous
Article Abstract:
Wine producers seeking to expand sales into China face formidable obstacles. They must market wine to a population that is mostly unfamiliar with the product and pay taxes totaling 120%. Distribution and storage problems are also a major drawback. Despite this, the potential for wine sales in China is enormous and the country's wine market has experienced rapid growth in recent years. An eventual shakeout among a growing number of wine merchants is expected to take place as wine becomes more popular with consumers.

Article Abstract:
Chinese wines are attracting increasing international interest as producers shift away from traditional extremely sweet varieties. Some wines are exported to southeast Asian countries and to Chinatown areas of cities such as Paris and London, but the domestic market is still most influential. Chinese wines cannot really be ranked among the best in the world, but are certainly very suitable as an accompaniment for strong, soy-flavoured seafood dishes.
