Breaching the ramparts
Article Abstract:
Clandestine migration from Morocco to Spain appears to be increasing. There are only ten miles between Africa and Europe at the Straits of Gibraltar, and averages wages are twenty times as high in Spain. Migrants are increasingly crossing in rougher, winter seas, when previously they tended only to cross in summer. There could be up to 700,000 illegal workers in Spain, where employers are not penalized for using them. Moroccan officials are seeking a quota for migrants to Europe, and the Moroccan economy would be affected if migration ceased.

Where the grass is greener
Article Abstract:
Canada aims to encourage knowledge-based companies, but taxes are lower and wages are higher in the US, so employees are more difficult to come by in Canada. There has been net immigration into Canada from the US for some of its history, but the flow is toward the US in the 1990s. Universities in the US can offer more resources to academics as well as higher pay. Commodity-based activities have less of a problem in attracting skilled workers. Canada can attract immigrants of a higher quality as one way of tackling the problem.

Go south, young child
Article Abstract:
There is concern about the number of children leaving Bolivia to work in inhumane conditions in Argentina and elsewhere. These children may be sent by their parents in the hope that they can earn funds to send home. This migration is a reflection of the poverty of some parts of Bolivia. Measures are being taken to seek to control the migration, but until the underlying problem of poverty is tackled, any such measures are likely to have little success.
