Breaking the general's spell
Article Abstract:
The Chilean government is seeking the release of General Augusto Pinochet who faces extradition to Spain from Britain on torture, genocide and murder charges. The US has hinted that Pinochet should be allowed to return to Chile, though it is unlikely that he would be tried there. The Chilean government claims that Chilean democracy could be threatened by the arrest of Pinochet, but this does not appear to be the case. Pinochet has immunity in Chile, and it is unlikely to be taken away by Chile's Supreme Court.

The general out of his bunker
Article Abstract:
Former Chilean dictator, General Augusto Pinochet, has been arrested in the United Kingdom. A Spanish judge, Baltasar Garzon, is investigating the deaths, torture and disappearance of Spaniards in Chile and Argentina, and over 70 Spaniards were victims in Chile, according to Garzon. The Chilean government argues that Pinochet has immunity because he uses a diplomatic passport, though he is not accredited to the UK. The political right is organizing demonstrations and has threatened a boycott of Congress.
