Brick by brick: Japan lowers wall between banks and brokers
Article Abstract:
Japan's Ministry of Finance will deregulate its financial market in Apr 1993. Long-term credit banks, trust banks and the agricultural bank, the Norinchukin, will be allowed to set up securities subsidiaries. They will be able to underwrite and sell equities or derivative products, but not distribute convertible bonds. Brokerages will be able to open trust-banking operations. Only the Industrial Bank of Japan (IBJ,) however, is likely to invest heavily in subsidiaries due to the ministry's tight controls.

Cash in delivery: custodial banking comes of age in Asia
Article Abstract:
Asia's banking industry has expanded to include the handling of securities for clients. The region is ripe for custodial banking due primarily to the growth of equity markets, the institutional investments pouring in from Europe and North America and the growth of private pension trusts within Asia. Custodial banking has become a lucrative service, mainly for international banks, which have the edge over the local competition in terms of skills, banking networks and information technology.

Jewel loses lustre
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Bank Ltd has built a reputation for avoiding risky deals and operating within manageable limits. It has basked in this image as an exact opposite of its parent, HSBC Holdings, which has been more profligate in its loans. Hang Seng Bank Ltd has, unfortunately, become involved in a $118 million loan to a financially distressed Canadian real estate developer that threatens its stable image.
