Bring the harvest lawsuits home
Article Abstract:
Some US farmers and grain elevators are estimated to have suffered losses amounting to between $500 million and $1 billion from hedge-to-arrive contracts. Under these contracts, the producer enters into a cash contract with the elevator to sell grain for future delivery. The price stated in the contract is hedged by the elevator by selling futures contracts. Losses have arisen from the fact that grain prices doubled in 1996. More than 100 lawsuits have been filed so far, and more are anticipated.
