Bringing the benefits of quality to construction
Article Abstract:
The British Standards Institution (BSI) establishes standards for building materials and codes of practice for building design through a system of committees made up of representatives from the construction industry, government and researchers. Some 2,500 standards and codes of practice relevant to construction have been produced. The BSI works closely with its international counterparts and is implementing the harmonisation of standards throughout the European Economic Community. It is also promoting the quality assurance standard, BS 5750.

A European mark for building products
Article Abstract:
The European Construction Products Directive requires building products that are sold in the European Community to carry the Communaute Europeene (CE) mark. This identifies products that conform to essential requirements of safety but does not measure the quality of the product. Individual countries within the European Community will be able to set levels of standards to which products used in the country should conform and this will have the effect of making conformity to national standards mandatory for products seeking the CE mark.
