British Airways deal faces tight review: status of U.K.-U.S. treaty could be crucial
Article Abstract:
British Airways' (BA) plans to phase in its alliance with American Airlines could see major opposition from regulators. BA proposed to phase in the alliance over a four or five-year period. However, both BA and American have a strong hold on UK-US air routes. Regulators in the US are studying a wide range of proposed cooperative arrangements. One such arrangement could have American placing its code on a London-to-Munich BA flight. This would allow American to sell a through ticket from New York to Munich. Both BA and American claim they should be allowed to have such marketing partnerships in accordance with existing treaties. US officials have said that they oppose any greater BA-American partnership without a new liberalized air treaty between the US and the UK.
