Business software takes off as suppliers scramble for sales
Article Abstract:
Lotus Development Corp. is in the process of establishing itself in European corporate business software markets, but its move into Europe has it in direct competition with Ashton-Tate Co., which was in Europe a year before Lotus and which recorded $20 million in sales in Europe in 1984, double the $10 million sold in the same markets by Lotus. Lotus's Symphony and Ashton-Tate's Framework are positioned to capture the burgeoning corporate markets in Europe, both of which add to the companies' major product lines, Lotus's 1-2-3 spreadsheet program and Ashton-Tate's dBase series of database management systems. Lotus's European marketing plans are described, including its new production plant in Dublin, and the problems it must overcome to be successful are discussed.
