Coup ousting Thailand's Premier tests democracy in key U.S. ally

A bloodless coup d'etat has occured in Thailand while Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was on a diplomatic mission at the United Nations in New York. The Asian country has struggled into democracy and has been supported by the United States. Thailand has an influential monarchy although it is unclear if they had a role in the insurgency.

Business enterprises, businessmen and multinational companies in Indonesia are playing it safe by supporting various political parties in the forthcoming presidential elections. Previously, there was only one choice, Pres Suharto and his ruling Golkar party. However, none of the present candidates have a clear economic platform and the country's economy remains shaky. With no clear pro-business candidate, businessmen are covering all bases.
