C-DAC POSITIONS ITS MISSION BEYOND BUSINESS, TECHNOLOGY
Article Abstract:
Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) of Pune is involved in software development in Indian languages. It has taken up the task as a social mission rather than as a mere business or technology. With a view to reach 90 percent of Indian population, C-DAC is exploring the possibilities of computation in Indian languages. Its GIST (graphics and intelligence script based technology) group has developed Indian language application software packages which are currently being used in a wide range of activities of sugar and milk Co-operatives in Maharashtra. C-DAC's application software packages being used in voter's identity card, video subtitling, teleprompting and desktop publishing. It has developed a product, Chameleon, which converts video cassettes into CDs. C- DAC has developed the Indian language interface for MS-DOS applications and Indian language word processor on Windows. (gs)

CABLETRON TO SOURCE GLOBAL CUSTOMERS' ORDERS FROM INDIA

Cabletron Systems Inc (CSI) of USA plans to source the major part of its global software contracts from India. The decision forms part of its plan to increase its annual overseas revenue from network management software business, from the present $100 million to $1 billion over the next two years. CSI has invested $3 million in its software technology park (STP) at Mumbai. It has developed Spectrum, a network management software at its software development centre in Mumbai. (gs)

HMT(I) SCRIPTS GROWTH PLAN FOR SOFTWARE UNIT

HMT (International) Ltd (HIL) has drawn up plans for the growth of its software division. It plans to increase the customer base for Vikas (an enterprise wide resource management solution). It will also offer conversion and engineering design services like Y2K and euro conversions. It also plans to enter transcription services (medical and legal).
